Darren Weir is set to dominate the 2017 Australia Stakes field after nominating four of his stable’s stars, including Black Heart Bart and Palentino.

A three-time Group 1 winner, Black Heart Bart is a proven first-up performer having finished second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in autumn last year, as well as winning the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at the beginning of his spring campaign.

Palentino has claimed two Group 1 titles to date, but has not been seen at the races since failing to fire and eighth in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m) on November 5th.

The Teofilo entire resumed in spring for fourth in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m), before placing fifth in the Memsie Stakes and winning the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) most notably.

Godolphin is also set to launch a multi-pronged attack in the Moonee Valley feature, after trainer John O’Shea included both Chetwood and Peacock in 2017 Australia Stakes nominations.

Chetwood was a standout for Godolphin in spring and has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing.

Taking out a pair of talent-rich Sydney sprints over 1250m and 1350m respectively, the Exceed And Excel gelding claimed his first black type win in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1350m) and returned to the paddock after comfortably winning the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) on October 8th.

Three-year-old Peacock steadily built to the task in spring; running fifth in the Black Angus Beef Plate (1300m) and third in the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1400m) before ending his campaign with a win in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) on October 15th.

Malaguerra will also launch his autumn campaign on Friday after being included in 2017 Australia Stakes nominations by Peter Gelagotis.

Claiming his first Group 1 title when beating a smart field to the line in the BTC Cup (1200m) during the Brisbane Winter Carnival last year, the Magnus gelding resumed in spring for second in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) before holding on to claim a career-best win in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 5th.

Having failed to justify his favouritism when fifth in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 26th, Malaguerra will relish the conditions of the Australia Stakes first-up.

Stable mate Mourinho is also set to make his long-awaited racing return after being included in 2017 Australia Stakes nominations, while multiple Group 1 winning kiwi Turn Me Loose is also expected to take his place in the race field.
