Black Heart Bart began his racing tenure under the guidance of Vaughn Sigley in Perth, but has undoubtedly found career-best form since transferring to Weir’s Victorian stables prior to the 2017 Autumn Carnival.

Weir has been thrilled with the benefit that the Blackfriars gelding has taken from his time away from racing and is confident that he is well-equipped to lay a great account for himself in the Australia Stakes 2017, following a smart barrier trial last Tuesday.

“We had an important trial day on Tuesday morning,” Weir told Racing Ahead.

“Black Heart Bart trialled really well. He’ll probably resume in the Australia Stakes I’d say on a path towards the Orr and the Futurity.

“The owner is still confident he can run a trip, but I think we’re sticking to the 1400m or a mile as more of his go.

“He’s beautiful and sound and without doing too much, trialled quite well. We’ll have another couple of gallops between now and Friday week and hopefully he’ll run well first-up.

Black Heart Bart posted a number of strong results at black type level and has secured a career total of fourteen wins and thirteen minors, through thirty-six competitive appearances.

Debuting for Weir to finish a close second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) last autumn, Black Heart Bart stormed home to win the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) before again placing second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

Winning his first Group 1 crown in The Goodwood (1200m) and ending his campaign second in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), Black Heart Bart resumed in spring for a dominant first-up win in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) before running second to stable mate Palentino in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

Posting his third win at the highest level in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 24th, the gelding out of Sister Theresa finished second in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m) to Winx and had clearly had enough by the time he placed ninth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

The 2017 Australia Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday (January 25th).
