Black Heart Bart has been confirmed to make his competitive return in the feature race and remains an outright $2.70 favourite in 2017 Australia Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Malaguerra ($3.90) and Chetwood ($4.40).

Will Black Heart Bart justify favouritism and win the Australia Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

Chetwood ($4.40)

Godolphin runner Chetwood was undefeated through four spring starts and arguably offers punters the best value for money at current 2017 Australia Stakes odds. Taking out a pair of talent-rich Sydney sprints, the Exceed And Excel gelding made a successful transition to black type company by easily winning the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1350m) on September 16th, before ending his campaign with a two-length triumph in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m). Drawn well in barrier 8, leading Godolphin hoop James Doyle will take the ride on Chetwood in the Australia Stakes.

Black Heart Bart ($2.70)

Black Heart Bart’s class is sure to count for a lot in the Australia Stakes 2017 and the multiple Group 1 winner should be right in the finish of the race after jumping from the ideal barrier 3. Resuming in spring for his second win at the highest level in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), Black Heart Bart placed second to Palentino in the Group 1 Makybe Diva (15600m) before returning to winning form in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m). Placing second to champion mare Winx in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m), the Blackfriars gelding simply did not handle the conditions in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) last time out but should relish the Australia Stakes first-up.

Peacock ($21)

Godolphin’s second entrant Peacock is weighted very well as a three-year-old and is arguably over the Australia Stakes odds at $21 for success, or $4.90 to finish in the first three. Steadily building to the task through winter, the Lonhro colt resumed for fifth in the Black Angus Beef Plate (1300m) and third in the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1400m) before taking out the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) on October 15th. Craig Williams will take the ride on Peacock from the ideal barrier 2.
